It can be checked to be sure where number one is in the distributor by removing number one plug stick your finger over the hole and bump the engine over with the starter till the compression comes out past your finger that is when the rotary bug has just past number one. Looking down on the distributor cap the top hole on your left side should be number one but that is not always so the distributor can be installed so any one of the holes can be number one. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 counterclockwise in the distributor cap. The plug nearest the radiator is number one.
